Halloween is only a couple of weeks away and we are right in the heart of the spooky season. If you have kids, this probably means your time has been spent costume shopping, picking out pumpkins at Brookshire Farms, and planning your trick-or-treating route for Halloween night.
If your child wears hearing aids, follow these tips to keep their device safe and working well to get the most fun out of this year’s trick-or-treating.
Keeping Hearing Aids Safe and Effective While Trick-or-Treating
- Check hearing aid batteries. Before you head out Halloween night, check to make sure your child’s hearing aids are fresh. It might be wise to even bring a few extra, just in case. If your child uses rechargeable hearing aids, make sure they are fully charged before heading out.
- Prepare for bad weather. There’s a chance it might get a bit chilly or even rain while you’re out trick-or-treating. If rain is in the forecast, use a hearing aid sleeve or pack an umbrella. If the weather is cold and you need to keep your child’s ears warm, avoid ear coverings that put too much pressure on the hearing aid that they interfere with hearing.
- Use a hearing aid clip or cord. Halloween night can be chaotic. The last thing you would want is for your child’s hearing aid to fall out and get lost or damaged. A hearing aid clip or cord will let you attach your child’s hearing aid to their costume to prevent any mishaps.
Hearing Protection This Halloween
Regardless of if you or your children have hearing loss or normal hearing, it’s important to protect your ears during Halloween festivities.
If you are going somewhere with loud music, fireworks or other loud noises, consider hearing protection for you and any children you take with you. Noise exposure is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in people of all ages, and research shows us that nearly 15% of children between the ages of 6-19 have some degree of hearing loss.
To prevent this, wear earplugs, earmuffs or other forms of hearing protection that works for you.
