When growing communication skills, learning to recognize emotions is vital. Children with hearing loss<\/a> may struggle to identify speech emotions and instead rely solely on visual cues. Hearing aids can be a great help in teaching children to identify verbal and emotional cues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Can Hearing Loss Affect Emotional Understanding?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A study comparing emotional understanding in social situations of children with hearing loss versus children without found that children with hearing loss neglected ambiguous emotional information in favor of explicit visual cues. Children with hearing loss do this to help avoid misunderstandings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the study found this adaptive strategy effective in recognizing emotions, they noted that the strategy  \u201cmay lead to misinterpretation of emotions in social situations.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
